How Built Environs brought real-time quality visibility to every complex build
Built across hospitals, schools, stadiums and airports
Over 35 years, Built Environs, a McConnell Dowell company, has delivered some of Australia and New Zealand’s most complex social infrastructure, from the Flinders Medical Centre Redevelopment and Auckland Airport’s Western Terminal Integration, to the Bundha Sports Centre and Point Cook South Schools. These aren’t straightforward builds. They’re projects where quality failure isn’t an option.
Watch the videoAt the end of a project, something was always missing.
It was the end of a project. Staff had moved on, some had left the business entirely, and the quality records that were supposed to tell the full story of that build had gaps in them. Documents were missing. Someone needed to scan something in. Someone else had to chase an email.
For Lex Hanegraaf, General Manager HSEQ at Built Environs, that moment was a turning point.
“I just thought, there’s got to be a better way than this.”
THE CHALLENGE
A good internal QA culture with no way to scale it.
Built Environs’ QA culture was genuine. The commitment to doing quality work was there across the business. But the process holding it together was paper-based, manually intensive, and critically, impossible to monitor in real time.
The workflow was painfully familiar to anyone who’s managed quality on a complex build: someone fills in a form on site, it gets scanned, it lands in an email, someone else has to grab it and file it somewhere. By the end of a project, pulling together a complete, coherent quality record meant days or weeks of administration. And even then, things fell through the cracks.
“The most painful part of our previous process was: all someone’s going to scan it in, they’ve got an email, we’ve got to grab it, we’ve got to sign in somewhere.”
At scale, across multiple trades, multiple subcontractors, multiple sites, that process wasn’t just slow. It was a liability. The team knew it too. But as Varun Dinesh, Built Environs Senior Quality Advisor put it, “quality is often an afterthought” in construction. The industry had been doing it this way for decades.
With up to “60% of sector incidents linked to quality failures”, the stakes for getting this right went well beyond administration.
WHY VISIBUILD
Simplicity has to win, or nothing will change
Built Environs weren’t looking for another complex platform. They’d seen what happened when you introduced a system that required training, buy-in, and ongoing management overhead, the workforce pushed back, adoption stalled, and the system sat unused alongside the paper it was supposed to replace.
What they needed was something simple, purposeful, and effective on site, not just in a boardroom presentation.
“Having a busy, complex system isn’t what the workforce wants, and it’s not what I need. Something simple, easy to use, effective is really what we want, and that’s what Visibuild delivers.”
Visibuild’s offer was specific: real-time visibility, a streamlined accountability process, and a platform that worked as well on a mobile device on site as it did on a desktop in the office.
“I don’t think construction has had this level of visibility and access to real-time quality data ever before.”
Lex Hanegraaf, General Manager HSEQ, Built Environs
VISIBUILDS DIGITAL QA PLATFORM IN PRACTICE
From the morning check-in to the subcontractor conversation, the digital QA solution in practice
Adoption started with the morning routine. Before Visibuild, the start-of-day check-in on quality status was manual, fragmented, and always slightly out of date. Now, the team checks the desktop in the morning to get a full picture, and then moves to mobile on site.
“In the morning we would check on the desktop, it’s much easier to see everything on the computer because it’s all there. On site, we’ll look at the mobile device. Its as easy as ever. We’ll get checklists, we’ll have hold points, we’ll come out and have a look. And then if it’s all good, we’ll keep the approval and continue.” Alex Browne, Graduate, Built Environs.
Town meetings changed too. Instead of trying to chase status updates from subcontractors ahead of the meeting, the team runs through Visibuild live, checking all points are complete, all items are up to date, all subcontractors are tracking as they should.
The subcontractor dynamic was one of the more significant shifts. With paper, it was easy for things to be missed, deferred, or simply not done. With Visibuild, accountability is built into the process from the start.
“It definitely holds people to account early on. There’s definitely less chasing of trades and subcontractors.”
The initial resistance, which Varun says is inevitable with any change, faded quickly once the team understood what the platform was actually for.
“Once they understand the purpose of this and how it’s going to help them, and how they can showcase the good work that they’re doing, I’d say 100% of them come on board pretty much immediately.”
QUALITY RESULTS
When a client asks, the answer is already there
The change that Built Environs talks about most isn’t a single metric. It’s the shift from reactive to real-time, and what that means when a client asks a question.
Before Visibuild, responding to a quality query from a client or principal meant going away, compiling information across multiple sources, and coming back, sometimes a week or two later. Now:
“If anyone asks for information, we’ve got it there for them right away. We don’t have to go away and compile information for a week or two weeks and come back to them. We can go back to the office, pull it together and send it off straight away.”
That responsiveness has a direct impact on client confidence. The quality of the data, and the speed at which it can be accessed, is now a point of credibility for Built Environs in client relationships.
Across site operations, the team has seen a measurable reduction in the number of defects identified late, fewer administrative hours spent chasing records, and a shift in how quality is perceived, from something that happens at the end of a job to something that’s live, visible, and everyone’s responsibility.
“I don’t think construction has ever had this level of visibility and access to real-time quality data. Ever before.”
“Having everything digital and live is a complete game changer.”
Alex Browne, Graduate, Built Environs
For Built Environs, the shift to Visibuild wasn’t just a technology decision, it was a commitment made concrete. A commitment to clients, to the industry, and to a standard of quality that paper and legacy software was never able to properly evidence.
The industry has always relied on a piece of paper at the end of the day to say the work is done, with limited evidence, limited oversight, and limited accountability. Built Environs is changing that, one project at a time.
“Change is the hardest thing to come by. No one likes change. But once you embrace it, the reliability, the accountability that you get? Yeah, it’s pretty cool.”
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Everything you need to know about managing quality & compliance at scale.
How does Visibuild help manage quality across multiple subcontractors?
Visibuild gives principal contractors like Built Environs a single, real-time view of quality activity across all trades and subcontractors on site. Hold points, checklists, and inspection approvals are tracked live, so instead of chasing subcontractors and trades for updates or waiting for paperwork to come in, the team can see exactly where things stand and follow up where it matters.
How long does it take for site teams to adopt a digital quality platform?
Resistance to change is normal, and Built Environs expected it. What they found with Visibuild was that once site teams understood the purpose, and realised it helped them evidence the quality of their own work, adoption was fast. In their experience, the majority of team members came on board almost immediately once that penny dropped.
Can Visibuild be used on large, complex construction projects?
Yes, it’s built for exactly that environment. Built Environs uses Visibuild across a wide range of complex social infrastructure projects including hospitals, schools, stadiums and airports. The platform scales across multiple trades, sites and subcontractors without adding administrative complexity for the teams using it on the ground.
How does real-time quality data improve client relationships?
When a client or principal asks a quality question, the answer used to take days or weeks to compile. With Visibuild, Built Environs can pull accurate, up-to-date quality data immediately and respond on the spot. That responsiveness builds credibility, and changes how clients perceive the contractor’s grip on their project.
