Supporting the next generation of construction

Helping the Next Generation of Construction Professionals Find Their Feet

Starting a new job is challenging. Starting a new job in an entirely new industry can be even more daunting.

For Mietta Nolan, a young Contract Administrator at 2Construction, that was exactly the situation she found herself in when she joined the construction industry after working in retail fit-outs.

We met Mietta last year when we visited the 2Construction team at the Toyota Essendon Fields project. It was her first major project, and she was being introduced to a completely new way of working.

“It was very daunting, Initially. Everything was a lot bigger than I’d ever worked for before.”

Turning a daunting project into a learning journey

For someone new to construction, there is an enormous amount to take in. New terminology, processes, quality requirements, documentation and site activities all need to be understood, often while the project is moving quickly around you.

Visibuild helped make that process feel much more manageable for Mietta.

Rather than trying to absorb everything at once, she could learn by doing: seeing what was happening on site, understanding what needed to be checked, documenting it and gradually building her knowledge of what good quality assurance looks like.

That hands-on learning is important for anyone starting out in construction.

And it highlights something we don’t always talk about when we talk about construction technology: the role technology can play in developing people.

A structured way to learn on the job

Visibuild gives junior team members a structured way to engage with active projects. Information is organised in a way that makes it easier to understand what is happening, what needs to be checked and what needs to be documented.

For a new starter, that structure can make a big difference.

Instead of relying entirely on someone else’s memory, trying to piece together information from different sources or worrying about whether they’ve missed something, they have a clear system to work from.

That confidence matters.

When people feel supported, they’re able to get involved sooner, ask better questions and take greater ownership of their work.

And as they become more familiar with the process, the support doesn’t have to come from someone standing beside them every step of the way.

From learning alongside a manager to working independently

Tim Callander, Project manager at 2construct, described how Visibuild allowed him to initially teach her what needed to happen on site, and then give her the confidence and framework to do it independently.

Once the required information and processes were established, Mietta could go out onto site herself, understand what activities were taking place and complete the required inspections and documentation.

For employers, onboarding isn’t just about helping someone survive their first few months. It’s about giving them the tools and knowledge to become productive, capable members of the team as quickly as possible.

The right systems can help accelerate that journey.

The ROI of investing in your people

There is a clear human benefit to giving junior team members better tools and processes: they feel more confident, supported and capable.

But there is also a business benefit.

With Visibuild, a new team member can understand a project faster, follow established processes and work independently sooner, experienced team members can spend less time repeatedly explaining the same processes and more time focusing on the work that requires their expertise.

Visibuild also creates greater consistency and accountability across the team.

Everyone can work from the same information. Expectations are clearer. Work can be reviewed. Processes can be followed. And knowledge doesn’t have to live solely in the heads of the most experienced people on site.

For construction businesses, that can mean a faster path from new starter to confident contributor.

Building capability, not just completing projects

Perhaps the most compelling part of Mietta’s story is where Tim sees her going next.

“What would make me more pleased than seeing someone like Mietta become a PM? in her late twenties and running our own jobs.”

That’s the bigger picture.

Technology isn’t just about making today’s project more efficient. The right tools can help construction businesses develop the people who will be responsible for tomorrow’s projects.

Mietta arrived at Toyota Essendon Fields with limited experience in this side of construction. With the right people around her and Visibuild, a structured system to support her, she was able to learn, build confidence and become more efficient in her role.

That’s what good construction technology should do.

It shouldn’t replace experience. It should help people gain it faster.
